Keeping Your Pet Safe From Electrical Shocks in the Home

Trust Danny’s Electrical Service For All of Your Electrical Needs

It is important to keep your pet safe from electrical shocks in the home. Your pet is not just an animal; it is a part of your family. Like children, pets are notorious for getting into things that they shouldn’t. You can’t constantly keep an eye on them, so it is important to prepare your home for safety. Cats and dogs are unaware that electricity is dangerous and should be avoided. By the time that they realize they should avoid it, it will have caused them harm. In this month’s blog, Danny’s Electrical Service offers several methods of keeping your dog and cat safe around electricity.

Tuck Enticing, Dangling Cords Away

For your pet, there’s nothing more enticing to gnaw on than that dangling power cord in your living room. Tuck your cables away with a twist tie or cover them with plastic tubing. Make sure that cords are taut. Movement will catch the pet’s attention, enticing them to chew, causing an unpleasant (and perhaps lethal) electric shock.

Block “Cozy” Places Near Outlets and Electrical Connections

The warm space behind your dryer, computer, or other electrical appliance is enticing to many pets. It is not an uncommon image to see a cat lying on or next to your laptop. However, it is not the safest location for sleep. Anytime there are electrical connections, there is a chance for an electrical shock. Train your pet to stay away from these locations or fully seal them off.

Make Sure That All Sockets Plugged-in Are Flush To The Outlet

Whether you’re plugging in holiday lights, nightlights, or a TV, be sure that the plug prongs are fully within the socket. The plug should be flush against the socket. If this is not happening because of an issue with the wall socket, contact Danny’s Electrical Service. Otherwise, curious noses and tongues may receive a harmful shock from any exposed prongs.

Keep Them Away During Electrical Repairs and Improvements

When you have professional electrical work done, your pets may get interested in strangers or become possessive of their home. To keep them safe, it’s important to secure them in a room or cage. This prevents them from being exposed to any electrical work or power tools that the electrician uses. At Danny’s Electrical Service, we want everyone, including your furry friends, to be safe during electrical work.

Be Ready If Your Pet Experiences an Electrical Shock

Pets may be obstinate, no matter how many times we train them or how cautious we are. Check your cat or dog for indicators of an electric shock if you find any evidence of cable chewing. Look for burns on their body or if they’re drooling and having trouble breathing. If you determine your cat or dog has been shocked, you should administer cold compresses to the burns. It is also important to be familiar with CPR. Call your veterinarian right away for instructions, or take them to the nearest clinic immediately.
